Hi All,
I don't wish to diverge from discussion on OstFront and Blitzkrieg, but I just had to make a comment on the new singleplayer Panzers Demo that has just been released.
I downloaded it over the last couple of days. It contains a tutorial and one singleplayer mission. Why they decided to base the one demo mission on Warsaw I'll never know. Anyway, for some time now I have held high hopes for Panzers. After playing the demo I was both impressed, and disappointed.
The graphics were excellent. Everything I had expected, and more. The animations were the best I have seen in a RTS game yet. The tactics were reasonably good. But the organisation of the infantry was dismal at best. They have totally abandoned reality for the sake of making the game simple for them to program.
Not long ago, I asked a question on the Panzers forum, regarding the makeup of the infantry squads. All the screenshots that were available seemed to depict the infantry simply as groups (2-5 men) of soldiers, all armed with the same weapon. I asked if my estimate was correct, and they never answered me. Now I know why. Because I was right. So now, no matter how much I play this game, reality has gone out the window. It will always be just a graphically brilliant, WW2 RTS game. In my mind it will never qualify as a "wargame".
Why couldn't they simply copy the squad composition, and formations, of WW2. Just as Blitzkrieg made a good attempt at doing (and Adrian finished the job so well).
Don't these programmers know what an infantry squad is !! Most everyone else seems to. Maybe someone should tell them.
Gee, I'm glad I got that off my chest. Am I right, or is everyone else sane, and I'm the only one whose not?
I may still play it for the great graphics anyway. I loved Stormregions previous offering, S.W.I.N.E., for the same reason.
regards
