Here’s a tutorial on how to perform the minefields reconnaissance tasks at the beginning of the first missions both of North and South campaigns:
*WARNING* - THIS IS A SPOILER. Do not read unless you get stuck!
As stated in the briefing, you must use your engineers and reconnaissance squads, or the engineer truck and half-tracks in order to successfully recon the minefield belt. The goal of those objectives is to spot all possible gaps in the minefield belt, and in order to do so you need to push a recon or engineer squad (which can be either on foot or mounted in a half-track), or an engineer vehicle, on those spots. These are the half-tracks mounted troops on which the camera is centered at the beginning of the mission. Note that snipers aren’t eligible to perform this task, neither are armored cars.
Concerning gaps situated in wheat or ploughed fields, the easiest way to carry out your spotting is to skim the outer edge of the minefield, using the minefield warning posts as a guideline. When your troops discover a gap, it will become marked by an objective arrow to remind you of its location.
Some of the gaps are located on the roads leading to the enemy lines. Here again in order to discover whether those roads are mined or not (these minefields are randomly generated) you need to crawl a squad down each road, or drive the half-track they’re loaded in, until the road is checked as clear of mine, or you receive a message (in the upper left corner of your screen) stating the road is mined.
Here are maps of the missions with the general location of all the gaps you can discover. Gaps marked by a red square are located in wheat or ploughed fields, while possible gaps on roadways are marked by red circles:
North Campaign mission 1:
South Campaign Mission 1:
You do not have to remove any mine at this stage in order to succeed in your reconnaissance. But once you have a clear picture of where all gaps are and through which you’d like to drive your assault forces to attack the main Russian defensive line, it is advisable to widen that gap by using your engineer half-tracks. Laying down a smoke screen with your mortars in front them, or waiting for patches of rain that’ll decrease considerably the range of enemy weapons, will greatly help your engineers in performing their mine-clearing task. Eventually, once the defensive line is breached, it’s also a good idea to remove all remaining mines so that later on your supply trucks don’t blow up on one while driving back to the rear in order to resupply.
