The orange artillery circles will appear when AA guns aswel as tanks and a/t guns are firing and are out of visual range.
This is a design feature to balance the increased range of weapons (particularly the German guns). The circles will start appearing after a few rounds have been fired, so if the firing unit is out of visual range the player has a better chance of pin pointing it.
However, the smaller the calibre of gun the harder it is to locate as the circles become larger and more random.
In turn, you will find that the AI artillery will also start engaging your tanks and a/t guns more readily.

Mmmm, then there is a problem, I get the orange circles even when the units are in vis range. I keep getting circle even when I can see the offending units.

I can't say I have noticed this before. Once in visual range the circles should stop generating themselves, which they have done during testing.
Will check this out though. What mission are you on?

I have run through several test games and what I think you are facing is several a/t guns/tanks with mortars, particularly if you are playing a random mission.
Mortars have a very low noise signature. Thus, you only start getting circles if you are very close to them. And when their circles do generate they may well appear in visual areas. So it may seem that you have destroyed all visible enemy guns, but there may be a mortar behind that house or hedge etc...
Also in some instances it is very difficult to locate the Russian 45mm, so this maybe popping away at you and you just can't see it.

Hi there wolfseven. How are you going with the campaign? I just received my commercial copy of OSTfront Barbarossa yesterday, and will be making a fresh start today - hopefully we can discuss our battles. The stukas in this game were tweaked so they are quite deadly dive-bombers, and return to base as soon as they have dropped their bombs, so they survive for another sortie! The ju-87D was in essence a dive-bomber, and not a ground attack aircraft, later variants such as the 87G featured improved armour and cannons for strafing. At this stage, Bf109 and Me110 are what you will have for strafing, and better suited to the task .
