After a couple of weeks beta testing I was not happy with the current Chapter structure of 3 or 4 historical maps with random maps per Chapter.
The main reason for this is the inability to restrict the number of random maps that could be played per chapter. This means that a player (as per the original game) could build up core unit experience quite rapidly and ensure best equipment by playing just the random maps.
Thus, to minimise this practise and make the campaign more challenging, I have decided ( in conjunction with my beta testers) to split the historical maps into more chapters. Most will have one or two historical missions but not all will have access to random maps.
Saying that though in a few chapters you will need to play a set number or specific type of random maps to enable the historical map. For example: you may need to secure villages on your flanks before proceeding on to your main objective. So there will be some purpose to these maps ;D
You will also find other changes which will mean players have to take a calculated risk before deciding to go for a couple of random maps or straight for the historical mission (see separate thread on random maps). Rather than the original game when it became a matter of course to use the random maps to up-arm and re-equip.

This has already been done for artillery (as they were the fastest to up the experience ladder in the orginal game).
We are just going through final testing now, so if the Beta testers are ending up with loads of core units prematurely I will look at increasing the exp points.
